Because of these characteristics, clay tile pipe is an excellent option for gravity sewers as they are susceptible to root penetration – a detrimental issue that can result in laborious sewer repair and replacement of the entire pipe.


Cast Iron Pipe

These pipes, known for their excellent capability to withstand root invasion and earthquakes, featured prominently as a material in sewage systems dating back for over three centuries. However, since the advent of more technologically advanced materials such as ductile iron pipes, cast iron pipes are not as prominent as they once were. Major investments into sewer repair and maintenance frequently occurred surrounding this material, due to their proclivity to rust and corrode over time which caused collapsing at critical junctures.


Bituminised Fibre Pipe

Constructed from layers of wood fibres and viscoelastic polymer resin, this material of sewer pipes were eminent in older homes in rural areas due to being a low cost alternative to cast iron. However, these cheaper to manufacture materials come at a cost as bituminised piping gained a reputation for being an infamously weak and brittle sewer pipe material, with repair being extremely invasive as studier materials were used.
